The Evolution and Adjustion of the Bug

Monday, October 13, 2003

I spent a lot of the last week hemming and hawing...you see, I've got this plan...

I love my bug, I really do. But I suffer from Bus-envy. Everytime I see a micro-bus, I have to have one. Maybe it's the "oooo, I want that because somebody else has it" syndrome, but I'm pretty sure I just really dig their character. And after diving head first into the aircooled vw culture, I think I really have to have one. I mean really.

So, with that in mind there's a been a paradigm shift in how I'll go about the bug. Fix it up, make it shiny and nice and awesome and then, sell it. Then use those funds to purchase a pre 1968 bus. Then, then I can get wacky with the customizations. So, for now, forget the crazy paint job, forget a bigger engine. I'm going to make the bug as close to stock as possible and then sell it to an eager soul who wants to make it their own. Until then, Bugblog lives on as the work continues and Busblog waits in the wings.

Good times.

Good times indeed.

I did it! I got rid of that silly starter button that the previous owner had installed.

The ignition switch isn't bad (which I learned after removing the steering wheel and the dash components!), it works great, I guess she had her reasons for bypassing it.

I couldn't have done it without the help of the friendly folks on the aircooled newsgroup. I now need to find a good reference for the electrical system. The schematic I have doesn't much help when I'm staring at a bundle of colored wires.

The other goal for this weekend was to eliminate this squeak that has been coming from the rear driver's side wheel. I dunno what's making it but it's getting worse. It seems to only happen at lower speeds and it's annoying! So, I took the rear wheel off to see if I could locate the mystery noise. Unfortunately, nothing squeaks when the car is jacked up and you spin the wheel (or take it off).

This is going to be a tricky one to diagnose.

Other than that I played with the choke a bit as some had suggested that might be causing the weird starting and idling issues I was having. I think it's too early to tell if I fixed anything there.

Wha' Happened?

I've migrated Bugblog to Blogger for ease of updating and archiving. The more work I have to put into this the less likely I'll keep at it forever.
